- The Exorcist’
The Exorcist comes first in the list. It will be hard to fully understand exactly what happened when Exorcist opened in theaters in America in 1973 if you were not there; paramedics had to be called to multiplexes because people were falling out. When Regan vomited on the priest, the audience also vomited in their popcorns. Nobody had watched anything that freaky and it has stuck in people’s minds for years.
- The Shining’
This film has undergone remarkable public reappraisal since its release in 1980 when it was released. People have watched it over and over again trying to unravel the mystery behind this twisted masterpiece and a lot of theories have come up to try and explain exactly what happens in the film.
- ‘Psycho’
Who could have thought psycho by Alfred Hitchcock; a famous director in the 60s was going to be one of the bestselling films that he had ever made. The film on its own was about a homicidal hotel clerk who actually died 45 into the movie and later came back to haunt her killers. This one freaked people out and audiences literally hid under their seats.

Nowadays movies about masked and mysterious psychopaths who hunt teenagers have become too common but back in 1970s, this concept was new. Halloween is about a teenager who has a really bad Halloween after her brother escapes from an asylum. The music alone in this film will send chills down the spine. The title of this movies tells you what you should expect. There was massacre and chainsaw and it was shot for only $300,000. It involves a tragedy that befall a group of five youths but its graphic violence and the scary images shocked audiences in 1974.
- ‘Alien’
Any movie that features aliens freaks everyone and this one is no different. Such movies have made people to believe that there might be aliens out there. It involves a group of astronauts who get trapped in space then attacked by aliens who pop out their inner body parts one by one before a final showdown with Sigourney Weaver.
- The Haunting
This film also makes it in the list. It has remained chilling many years after it was released. It about a group of people who spend a night in an old and haunted house. It has so much suspense such as watching Julie Harris go insane and lesbian character which was unheard of in those days.
- Night of the living dead
Directed by George Romero, this film is about a young couple that is forced fend off a massive zombie attack in a large Pennsylvania farm. There was a lot of controversy after the release of this movie due to violence but the more the press talked, the more it was watched.
- The thing
This movie hit the theaters in 1982 with a very different agenda. Unlike other films, the thing displayed aliens as friendly creatures that would change forms so as confuse scientists. The men would not know if they were dealing with an alien or a colleague.
- Poltergeist
Similar to other horror films, Poltergeist begins with a happy hammily living in a peaceful environment until ghosts starts taking over their home. The ghost take over and sucks the daughter to her closet portal where she can only communicate through the TV set. It is extremely freaky.
