OVERVIEW

Judge Thatcher implores retired surgeon Dr. Richard Vollin to perform a delicate operation on his daughter, Jean Thatcher, to restore her health after a car accident. With the operation successful, Vollin befriends Jean and shares with her his passion of everything related to Edgar Allen Poe.

Vollin decides to reveal his growing love for Jean to her father, who quickly discourages him from pursuing the affair. Deeply angered by this, vollin hatches a plan when Edmund Bateman, an on-the-run murderer, arrives at his home asking for a new face so that he may live in anonymity.

Vollin performs surgery on Edmund Bateman and turns him into a disfigured monster. Now he tells Bateman that he wil only perform surgery again when Bateman has agreed to help him exact revenge on the Thatcher's.
